Mattanza were founded in 1997 thanks to the will of Mimmo Martino, the band’s singer and leader, but their roots are deep into the history of Calabria and the Mediterranean Sea. 'A people without history is like a tree with no roots: bound to die!’. Mattanza end all their concerts with this statement, speaking out against the cruel obliteration of the peoples’ cultures anf their heritages. Mattanza is resistance to ethnocide by the means of developing popular culture with a new, accessible language, mixing tradition with influxes of Mediterranean world music and with a mainly acoustic instrumentation. MATTANZA’s concerts are embellished by Mimmo Martino’s strong interpretation and Marika Gatto’s crystal clear voice, covering specific basic themes of southern Italy, rediscovering lyrics, nursery rhymes, proverbs, poetry and lullabies that otherwise would be totally forgotten.
